Cylinder damage
« on: August 22, 2017, 01:53:40 pm »
Question;  I have a OEM 346 ne cylinder with some damage.  There is a deep groove 1/8" above one of the transferes on the exhaust side, and about a 1/4" groove just under the transfere, same side.  No other damage.  Is it salvageable?   Maybe run with reduced power, or is it a total loss.  Have very little run time on it.  A wrist pin clip came off.

Yes I know they have dropped in price.  Just curious to see if the damage in this location will cause any problems other than premature ring wear.    I put a used Huztl piston, caber ring, and OEM clips on and have 140lbs compression.  Just want to see if it will last very long as is.  Will fire it up tomarow and get back with the results.

Are the grooves above the exhaust port? I have run many cylinders with scores below the exhaust port and have had good luck with them.

Yes.  There is 1 deep groove above and below the same exhaust port.  About 1/8" long on top, and 1/4" long below it.  Wish I had taken a photo, but didn't.  However the saw is running, and seems to run just as strong as it was before.  I never would have believed it.  When I first saw this, I was ready to trash it.   Glad I took a chance.  Just saved me some money.  I did learn a lesson out of the deal.  Never reuse wrist pin clips, ever!  It damn near cost me a cylinder.  I trashed all I had, and will order new OEM.  Good cheap insurance.  A big thanks to all for your input.
