346XP NE Woes
« on: September 27, 2012, 12:05:55 am »
I have this 346XP with only about 40 tanks thru it. I have been getting a lean condition between idle and Wot. The primer bulb hoses were stretched at the fitting so I replaced all the rubber hoses, didn't help.Changed fuel filter, fuel tank vent is good. I checked the intake manifold clamp and it was tight , no tears in manifold. So I put a new carb on , now it runs different but dies when opening the throttle from idle and the Lo screw is open max what the limiter allows. I'm now ready to snip the limiters off and go for more adjustment.

My problem is my tree service has been crazy busy , the 550XP is not available here yet and my new workshop is still not finished and my pressure testing equipment etc is still in storage bins. The 346 is almost useless for my tree cutting business but it would have come in handy for brushing undergrowth in my last powerline clearing contract.
I might as well dig out my pressure test tools even though I don't have a workbench setup yet. I'm now thinking seals. Even though I don't get any variation in rpm when the saw idles in all different positons.
Good project for the diagnostic experts here , any ideas?

Impulse line under the intake about 2" long?  Seen hole wear in them from rubbing.

I checked the impulse hose after pulling cylinder off, checked out OK.
Not a mark on the P/C.
Will snip the limiter caps and go from there. Brand new carb is made in China so you never know.

You should be able to reset the carb so it runs OK.
There should be no hesitasion...

They are alway's set too lean regardless of fuel.

There's a postion when the butterfly opens that the pressure drop across the venturi has to shift from drawing fuel from the forward or low speed jet to the rear or high speed jet .Only speculation on my part but it would make sense if as Magnus said the carb was set lean from the factory that it might not be supplying enough fuel to make that transition .

Then too if you're like most of us that have "doctored " the exhaust a tad that would compound the problem of not enough fuel .

Which coil does this saw have?  It is possible the ignition advance is malfunctioning.  Although it does sound fuel related, just throwing it out there being its the second carb.

Not sure, I'm new to Husky saws for the last few years, but I believe my 372's module would fit the 346, then from there I can see if thats the problem.

I only have the screen pulled Al --quote Willard .

Yeah but it could alter the back pressure enough it doesn't want to spool up with the factory carb settings .I really don't know just a guess .

Just an example .I have a couple Macs that I've pretty much gutted the mufflers and they are loud enough to wake the dead .Now I realize a Mac muffler and a modern pressure can is not the same animal .Never the less if the low speed is set too low they have a hell of a time spooling up .Fart ,hiccup and just generally make a nuisance of themselves .

No doubt once you cut the limiters off that thing it won't take long to find out .

Thanks Al, but I know it's not a muffler back pressure issue. I'm gonna leave the 346 to collect dust again for a while, I got to much wood to cut then pull wrenches, gonna hire a contractor to finish my workshop before ther's a foot of snow on the ground.
Too bad you weren't a little closer Al , I need a good electrician to wire the structure.
