346XP Questions
« on: December 01, 2012, 06:56:14 pm »
Great site. I've learned a lot reading the archives. This is the first post for me. I have an OE 346XP that was running good enough but only had 125 compression. I put a new piston on it and have cleaned up the cylinder which looks ok. I would like to do some conservative, "do no harm" type work to it while it's off.

There's a wire edge leading into the ports after what appears like the factory chamfer in the bore. Seems like at the least that should come off flat to the run, but is a radius better? Would squaring up the exhaust port corners be the next step?

The saw has the plastic clamp on the insulation wall. I'm not aware there was a leak, but I saw the Jonsered mod and wondered if a generic hose clamp might work instead of the 2077/83 clamp. Am I better off leaving it alone and buying the kit when it looks like there's problem?

I've got a P5000 that's next in line after the 346. I'd like to do a bit more aggressive porting on it.

Thanks

Use a 372 Husky intake clamp after trimming up the plastic clamp or a Poulan 330 clamp which I used last time I did one.  Never tried a generic clamp but I did think about that on the last one, but I had none on hand.

The 2077 clamp is to tight to start with but will work. The other 2 are easier to slide on from the get go and the PP330 clamp was the easiest JMO.

I did my OE 346 and it didnt need it. I just couldnt stand the thought of burning up my ported topend because of a warped ill fitting plastic clamp if it decided to go south while out cutting. Better safe then sorry IMO. I'm guessing 30mins to pull topend and do fix.

I used a cv clamp boot on the intake boot and opened up the exhaust port to closer match the gasket, but left it the same in the cylinder. I used a forester piston. Seems to run good.

Could you explain to me how the CV boot clamps work and how you install? I was working on my envoy and the boot cv clamp was not holding so I removed and used a hose clamp in it's place.

Neat idea unless you need to remove, is there a special tool for that?

the cv clam has wrinkled place on two sides that you crimp with a special set of pliers. it remains balanced on a shaft

your hose clamp was out of balance on the drive shaft

Sorry for thread hijack OP.

That might explain the slight but noticeable tire out of balance feel I am getting through the steering wheel now or might just be the tire wore weird when I had outer tie rod go bad and scuffed the tire wear pattern too.

It was tighter than the original plastic clamp when set at about 1.5". It slipped on about right . I didn't dare crimp it.
