362/365/371/372 Oil Pump and Drive Options
« on: February 18, 2014, 03:11:55 pm »
Being frustrated for some time now over just what the thinking was at Husqvarna when they changed the oil pump drive from the wing style to the single ear style. They specify the same part number for the oil pump in all saws (Husqvarna 503 52 13-05 (replaces 503 52 13-01)). However HVA specifies that there are two different pump drive gears that are supposed to work with this pump.

Two wing style (Worm Husqvarna 503 75 61-02 OIL PUMP DRIVE) and the newer single wing style (Worm Husqvarna 537 20 78-05 OIL PUMP DRIVE). So, according to HVA the pump drives are interchangeable, however in my experience they are not! In fact, I don't believe I have ever gotten the single ear style to work correctly in place ot the wing style.

This is BS is there something that I am missing?

I do know one thing conclusively though, some of the aftermarket clutch bells do not have a wide enough slot cut into their circumfrence to allow the single ear style pump drives to engage the bell and properly drive the pump. The notches just ride up over the top of the pump drive.

I only did 1 older 372 non strato with the newer single wing oiler set up. Everything was OEM,  drum etc and no problems with it.

I've found that the single-ear worm drive binds up on older oil pumps. I don't know if it's the pump housing or what, but it just binds up and won't turn. So in that case, I just get the double-ear worm drive and go with it. The single-ear worm drive works fine on newer oil pumps including the 385 oil pump when you put it in a 372.

Haven't noticed that the 385 pump is any different that the 372, it has the same part#. Perhaps I will put one for a 385 on my next order from HVA and compare to what I have in stock.

The AM single ear pump drives need to be deburred and sanded on the bottom so they don't lock up on the shaft.

OK, that is a good tip! How are you deburring the inside of the drive?

You can do it with a burr in a dremel.
