I've tried 1 ring pistons,2 ring,and 2 ring piston with 1 ring for racing,not seen much difference,however I do prefer the 2 thin ring piston and would prefer it for racing or stock or modified. I did find in a 1 ring piston hotsaw it suffered from some blowback out of the carb,I attributed this from high cylinder pressure blowing past the ring,so I really like the 2 thin rings,I think it was a smart move by saw makers.
