372XP 2 ring piston?
« on: June 11, 2018, 09:12:47 am »
Is there a piston with 2 rings that can be fitted on a 372XP which has a single ring piston?
Or can a 2 ring piston be used?
The reason why I ask is I have received a sample 2 ring piston that is intended for the Husky 372.
There seem to be some differences, but will it matter. See the images.
In one image I have used a single pin so that both are held at the same working height.

Our later 372 came with 2 rings in OE and also early 372 and 371 had 1 ring.  Use either or.

The rings form the two ring piston are thinner than the ring for the single ring piston.

What bothered me was whether that little difference (marked) would affect port timing

I would definitely recommend the piston with the 2 thin rings.

Single ring piston ring is 1.5mm thick.  2 ring piston ring is 1.2mm.  There are those that run single ring on 2 ring piston.  Or, new ring top groove old ring on bottom groove.

I run both in my 372's and don't see much difference in either, although some would argue.   Stick with OEM if you can.

I'm running oem 2 371 single ring pistons right now. Also going to buy 371 meteor single ring pistons for 2 more builds.

I run either too. Dont see any difference myself.

I've tried 1 ring pistons,2 ring, and 2 ring piston with 1 ring for racing, not seen much difference, however I do prefer the 2 thin ring piston and would prefer it for racing or stock or modified. I did find in a 1 ring piston hotsaw it suffered from some blowback out of the carb,I attributed this from high cylinder pressure blowing past the ring,so I really like the 2 thin rings,I think it was a smart move by saw makers.
