Couple of things that might zero us in on what it is

The 385, 394 and 395 have a removable plastic carb box and IIRC a cable operated throttle.

The 281/288 uses a different method involving a lever that passes through the rear of the clutch side of the case. The throttle lever is held in the tank handle unit using a long pin that passes through the throttle lever and into a recess in the tank and is held in position with a self tapping screw.

Well it is hard to judge by casting PNs but the 288 case has a part number of 501 80 03-06, so we are real close to it being a 288! IMHO 288s are killer saws, non epa and no goofey crap on them (sort of like a Ford 427 side oiler)! ::) I have one and it scares me every time I run it!

Maybe it is the part number for one of the case halvs? Those are not listed in the IPLs.

If bore is only "slightly smaller than my 394", the 394 has a 56mm bore, so that would let out the most of the saws in the list, however we do not know the his definition of "slightly".

61=48mm
66=50mm
162=48mm
181=52mm
266=50mm
268=50mm
272=52mm
281=52mm
288=54mm

The attached picture is the removable plastic carb box for a 394. Just post a picture of the crankcase faken from overhead. Looks to be a 281 or 288 measure the diameter of the piston.
