As far as filling it in, there's parts missing here. Called the local weld shop on that rod. 125$ a pound, 10 lb minimum to order. I hate that place,,,,,,,

10 pounds of magnesium rod should be quite a few rods because it is so light weight?

What i did was burn the powder coat off a old 55 case, then I wire brushed it, then I cut it into strips, theres the filler rod.  Filled in a stripped hole, drilled and taped it, all good, theres 3 other cracks to take care of next.

Tim, if the real filler rod wasn't $125 a lb  I'd buy some at a decent price...  Did some research and 4043 al filler rod is said to work on mag, I may try it on a part of the 55 and see what happens.

Cool, I have a whole bunch of cases and cylinders that i was going o put in the scrap metal bin. Next time you are around you can have a look and any thing you think is worth fixing, you can have. In the future you will be doing ALL of my light metal welding!

There are 3 areas that have cracks here, I cut a piece of a 55 case, the strip you see, and welded it on with other pieces of a 55, not pretty, but came out well in the end, the last pic is Sat. fix.  Its a work saw, not a show saw, so I'm happy.
I also find welding mag. easier then aluminum.
