395 Thoughts
« on: May 17, 2015, 04:45:31 pm »
Did some tree work with a guy for the first time, he has a 395.  30 tanks of gas run through it so far.  He asked me to adjust the carb as he says it doesn't feel like it has the power it should.  Well carb was set pretty much just right.  I ran the saw and felt the same thing, just doesn't cut fast, seems lifeless, seems like it has a rev limiter.  We did side by side cuts him on the 395, me on my 365 with a big bore kit and we were even.  Both lgx chain freshly sharpened.
So what can you all tell me about the 395, is it a detuned 394 to meet epa specs? Crappy port timing?  What has anyone done to wake the saw up?

Thanks,
Al

I ran a new not broken in STOCK 395 at a gtg. Was a friends saw and thought it was a pig.  I was hoping to myself it was just because it was on the first few tanks.

20'' white ash.  I checked compression, 144 psi.  Squish .040 plug was perfect in color.

Whats with the carb, adjustment screws only go from fully closed to about 5/8 turn out?

I had similar experience comparing a Stihl 660 to smaller saws, including a Husky 365. I think it has some to do with the torque of the big saws and the fact they turn generally lower rpm. Take the same 2 saws and bury 24" or 28" bars in some hardwood and there will probably be a much greater difference. JMO though, I could be wrong and don't have that much research into it.

Compression is low unless you're at some altitude. Most are normally 165-175.

If running a relatively short bar going up to an 8p drive sprocket would get the chain speed up some and improve things.
