There was a newer cap design that Husqvarna started using around 2005. Instead of having a O-ring seal, there is a molded rubber band with ribs. They have superior sealing capability compared with the old style caps.

The old style caps with the O-ring have 3 straight sided tabs sticking up on the cap. These tabs are thin. There is a wider middle one with narrow ones on each end.

The newer style cap, the tab is smooth, thick, and more rounded. There is a screw driver slot in line the center of the tab. But more important the sealing gasket has a broad flat sealing surface with tiny ribs to aide the seal as can be seen in the picture.

Either cap will fit either style tank on the chainsaws that I have. Talk with your dealer.

Below is a picture of the new style cap.

I have changed most of my old style Husqvarna gas and oil tank caps that didn't seal well with the new style caps from the dealer.

I have a chainsaw currently that the old style cap leaks unless I tighten it just a little tighter with a wrench than what I can with my fingers. I will replace it before warmer weather returns.

The next time you remove the gas cap, inspect the area of the tank where the cap fits for cracks, just to be on the safe side.

thanks for the info on caps
the caps I have, I have 4 all together all are the same with the last one's I bought being last yr
and I am sure the tank has no cracks, been keeping close eye on it
I wish my local dealer were not so terrible to deal with, but will stop by to order a new vent and ask about the new cap style, and try one , but again, no matter how tight I tighten mine now, it still leaks, and don't want to force tightening and maybe crack something too'

I agree that you may crack the tank if you are not careful.

I actually get most of my Husqvarna parts over the Internet.

If you need help with part numbers or sources, just ask?

so this way I can take one with me I have and try to get a different style to see if a new stye will work or not
but I still think its not the whole issue, the cap that is

I push the vent out with a pair of long 45* needlenose pliers.  Then take air hose and blow the little white vent out.  Replace the little white vent tap back in with round punch or a nut driver slightly smaller than black tube.
The new style cap is the "Dog" for stopping the 55,261 and more from leaking.  I've replaced the oring and still leak use new old style cap and still leak after 1-2 removals.  Again get the new style it works.

just an update
I made it the local shop, called first and they said they had a gas cap and vent in stock
got there only to find out they had neither one
 so they ordered it
I decided to give it a good cleaning and have a close up look at it
well this is the first time I have taken the air filter off sice it was in the shop for idel issue and the gas vent deal last summer
once I removed the air filter I found that there was only one screw holding the carb on, guess last shop forgot to replace both??
so I am now leaning that maybe that is why it idles is a little off, sucking in some air maybe, so need to order a new screw for that too, I also found 2 other screws missing
so that's the last time that shop gets any business

But on the fuel breather vent
I don't know, I cannot see it in the tank,( I dumed out all the fuel first)
or can see where the heck it is at or how to get it out if I find it?

I looked at the service  manual pic's/ drawings of it and well I do not see one on my saw where it is on the drawings??
so now I am confused to say the least

I added just a couple ounce's of fuel after cleaning it up and putting back screws on all but the one carb screw(didn't have one)
and it fired right up idled just fine
BUt as soon as I shut it off/put it down
it started leaking fuel out the cao again
its like its under pressure, so again I am still thinking its the vent, but not sure how to replce or even find it now???

Looking at the clutch side of the saw. If you were to separate the handle\fuel tank from the crankcase you would see it better.Empty the fuel tank and Look in the top of the fuel tank. You will see a needle like part of the vent sticking inside the tank. On the outside it will be a recessed screw sized hole. Hope that helps. I dont have a 55 or i would take a pic for you.

No you shouldn't have to. I was just trying to describe where the vent is located.
