55 EPA
« on: November 08, 2016, 11:12:31 am »
Picked up a husky 55 EPA, scored piston but the cylinder cleaned up. Found the reason carb chocked totally full of saw dust I mean full behind jet screws and in the diaphragm.

Not sure if I want to just buy a 44mm piston or for close to the same money buy a cylinder and piston kit for 46MM(?).

Also have given thought about just a new ring on the old piston as it cleaned up fairly nice.

There shouldn't be a 44 mm top end on any version of that model, but of course someone may have replaced the original with one. Measure the bore of that cylinder.

During the first years of the EPA version they used a closed port 45 mm top end though, instead of the more common 46 mm open port one. The serial number will help telling what your saw originally come with

The 45 mm closed port one is preferable to the 46 mm open port one, and more so if the 46 mm one is an aftermarket one and the 45 mm an OEM one.

If it were me and that saw for my use on the cheap. I could clean that piston up and clean ring groove and new caber or oem ring to reuse.  Worse case buy new piston kit.

Nothing wrong with a 46mm open port topend on a 55. Makes a good firewood cutting saw IMO.  Heck I had a aftermarket 46mm open port with smaller ports then oem and it still did just fine.

Here is a nice aftermarket meteor kit. This topend has been run on a few folks saws now with good results. http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/husqvarna/meteor-46mm-closed-port-55-husqvarna-pc/msg52401/#msg52401

More 55 info http://chainsawrepair.createaforum.com/husqvarna/husqvarna-55/

IMO if you can get good used oem try that first.  Cant go wrong with oem stuff IMO.

I have measured the bore and it is a 44mm. I thought really strong on just a ring and still think that is what I will do.

44 mm fits with a 51 EPA, but not with a 55 EPA - but there also were other models that used 44 mm top ends that would fit on any of them.

Is that piston scuffed, or are there just carbon smears on it?

Piston is scuffed a bit.
Can you tell by the serial number.

The serial number will tell when it was made, and usually the model number it was when it left the factory also is on the tag.

I'd buy a new ring and reuse that piston if it was my saw.

I think I will do that, just buy a ring. To busy now to fool with it for a while.
