My suspicion is there was something wrong with my mix - not enough oil.  Anyone recommend a good oil to use?

I'll probably replace the cylinder too going on the premise that if the piston is that cooked, it likely has gotten the cylinder out of round enough that the ring won't keep the pressure up like its supposed to.  Lack of pressure means lost power, and that will put a strain on other parts of the saw.

Jim,  if the 55 jug is salvageable & has the closed ports, it has some value to the folks who like to port chainsaws.

It might have been man of stihl. He bought a closed port 45mm or maybe 46mm closed port p+c from Baileys back a year or year half ago.  They were still out there new and  aftermarket if you knew how to look for them.  ;)

If I understand correctly,  you could go by the number of full & partial cylinder fins.  I forget (danged CRS) which is which, but I did notice that the fins on my 51 jug matched what to look for on a closed port 55 jug.

Does anyone here know if there are any variations in the 51 jugs?

I just did some quick research, apparantly the closed port jug requires the windowed piston to get the extra power.
I'm a chainsaw hoarder & tinkerer.  The brand isn't usually important,  if the price is right I'll probably buy it.

i got thousands of pic's,and after 3 hrs of huntin'......i'm just gonna wait for the saw to walk in for repair!.....all those part numbers make me dizzy too!
SSSOOO...the casting marks on the latest version cylinder mfg is what you need to see,and it's very visible from the pto side with no diss-assembly what so ever. (very handy for "us" in the know)

I ordered the piston assembly (piston and ring) from eReplacementparts.com. The part number is 503608171, and the site says it is for the Husky 55 built between 1990 - 01, mine being a 1998 model.  Oh, and the piston assembly is under $90.  If you know something I don't please don't hesitate to fill me in.

I know I am a newbe but I have been trying to find the setup you have. The piston you ordered is wrong!
I have done a lot of research. I bought a new piston and cylinder kit. It is aftermarket and 46mm. It and one like it are for sale everywhere and they will work to replace your piston and cylinder.Your cylinder you have now is 45mm.Lots of people with your setup are looking for the piston you have but they cant be found anywhere. So people are useing the larger 46mm cylinder and piston kit to fix there saws. Some are waiting for a piston to come out that will work someday. The closed port cylinder will put out a little more power at high rpms that is why people want them. The replacement aftermarket 46mm kit has more mid range power. Most people dont see the difference.

The piston with the windows cut in the side is what you have now the nonwindowed piston is the one you ordered.
