Back yard Saw Race. (Tips)
« on: November 24, 2013, 02:56:43 pm »
Not sure if this is posted in the right forum

I'm sure the pros won't give any tips out and that's understandable. But I'm hoping some of you guys could help me to get my 266xp to cut faster.

A little back ground info on the saw race. It's just a few local guys none are pros and pretty much compete for bragging rights about 2-3 times a years. They cut 7x7 or 8x8 poplar. I have never had a saw to be able to compete with but now I have an old 266xp.(or I think it is lol)

I am a complete rookie at this, So I have been reading about chains and I tried some of the techniques I will post a pic of the chain and hopefully someone will tell me if im doing it wrong or right lol should I run an 8 tooth sprocket or 7?
The Husky at the end of the video is what i will be using

Also here is a video a friend of mine posted on youtube a while ago

The small get togethers are a lot of fun and easy enough to organize.
We should share what we know... someone may learn...

Use a short loop of square chain that is razor sharp.  If your not familiar look up Oregon 72CK.  Run the chain a wee bit loose on the bar.  Put a little bit of octane boost in your fuel and make sure your carb is set correctly.  Should at least make you a contender?

Thats hotstart racing with saw on ground with hands on cant.  I've done that at fair racing.

Same post I already stated elsewhere.

Use full 3/8  square  stihl RSLK or Oregon CL for a little quicker work chain.
Test with 7-8 rims.  One might be faster in 1 cut like 8, but when you are doing change overs and 2-3 cuts the more forgiven one is the one I choose like a 7.  Like when you start pushing to hard in the heat of the moment in 2-3 cuts.
Muffler mod and carb tune.
If you want to  start getting crazy, woods port the cylinder.

Practice practice practice changeovers another place to cut big time off your cuts and listen to your motor and keep in the top rpm cutting.

I have timed the Oregon square grind and the stihl round ground on the same saw with the same bar in the same 10'' log and the stihl round ground was a good bit faster. Oregon square ground lately has not been up to par IMO. Stihl square ground is sharper out of the box than either mentioned. I would start with that and a good muffler mod and well tuned saw.

This is from 2010

Found a post from 2010 I made.

For you guys talking about stihl and oregon chain cutting speeds. I tested cut speeds of stock chains and machine grinded and atop square guide filed chain. I dont think I had a fresh loop of LG to try. The atop chain was oregon LP 058 goofy and square filed and then my 30 min square atop filed.

I was a little disappointed in my round grinder results I tested for fun too.

I found a nice clean 10"x10" very dry poplar cant in the barn that has been there for well over a year now.

Saw was a 357xp 7T running 93 octane 32:1 and a rich 13.8k. 3 cuts per chain, which allowed for the unseen knot hit and operator error in some of the times.

Chains were work chains tested.

I know factory sharp chains are not the sharpest out of the box, but I wanted to have a base to go off of. So RSLK, RSLHK, CL, RS, factory sharp were tested.

A. Stihl RSLK factory sharp..................................4.09...4.53 ...4.13

B. Stihl RSLHK factory sharp.................................4.47...4.74. .4.28

C. ATOP square sent in by Goran...........................3.41...3.38..3.34

D. ATOP goofy sent in by Goran............................3.75...3.59...3.8 1

E. ATOP sq my 1st try using new guide..................3.96....3.88...3.76

F. Oregon CL factory sharp..................................3.88....4.2 0...4.25

K. Stihl RS factory sharp....................................4.18..... 4.21....4.12

L. Stihl RS grinder sharpened..............................5.09.....5. 06....5.07

M. Woodsman pro RC machine sharpened..............4.71.....4.84....4.75

IMO all chains are pretty dull out of the box.   Good touch up first on anything.

I still have a partial 100' roll of that oregon CL that was ran in the above testing.

I have a GTG square chain in 60dl left too. Already ready for clean cants.  Not a full out racechain, but GTG stuff type chain you wouldnt want to use for work JMO.  Like not cutting dirty or barked wood.

Yep, about where the last rivet is at is what I looked for.  Others here know way more on this chain stuff then I do.
We used to have chain build offs just see how good we could do.  5-6 other guys here that I know of was into that.
