The plastic or the air gap tool both survive a little longer than the business card, after one use the card gets compressed in the areas of the coil poles, so too do the plastic and the air gap tool just not as quickly. McMaster Carr also sells precision plastic shim stock, their product 9513K21 is 0.0125 +/- 0.0006 (0.0119 to 0.0131) a 5x20 inch piece will cost you $3.57. I don't think you are going to get any closer than this.

There's one more thing to add to my next McMaster Carr order.  Can make about 20 gap tools out of that 5"x20" piece of plastic shim stock.  Lifetime supply....

Been using it for several years.  Works great!

I'm sure there are also places that sell steel shim stock, it would be a little more work to cut to the size you wanted and smooth the edges though. It is funny they don't make a steel tool at .012" One would last you a life time.

I just found a place that sells .012" stainless steel shim stock 6" x 50" roll for $18.78 you could make about 25 tools out of a roll and sell them for $5 each.

Erik, you are right on the metal shim, however you might think about some type of metal that would not be attracted by the flywheel magnets, perhaps copper, aluminum or brass. On second thought perhaps not aluminum it is too soft and would mar easily throwing off your gap.

Good thought, SS never even crossed my mind! Give it a try, let us know how it works! Only 18$, not bad Erik, not bad at all. I used to have a long reach feeler gauge that was used for what I can't remember but it had leaves about 6 inches long and I am sure they were SS. If you could find one like that perhaps you would save some time and money.

If I do, I'll make up a bunch and sell them cheap anyone who wants one. I'll let you know. I will add to my next amazon order with free shipping.

I bought a sheet of copper shim stock when I bought the plastic.  Like the plastic much much better.

So far I have still not gotten it to crank and run. Weather been messy a while but may work with it more in the next couple of days. About the only thing I have not done is replace the coil. I did break it down and clean it up. I hate to but I may have to give it up.
