diagnose problem with 357XP?
« on: August 10, 2018, 09:29:45 pm »
I'm having trouble with my Husqvarna 357XP. I bought it used 6 or 7 years ago. and it's been running fine up until recently.

It starts fine, and makes a few cuts with its normal power. However, after it warms up it will not go to full throttle and sounds strange - like it's straining. If I play with the throttle, sometimes it will catch and take off, but it doesn't stay at full power for more than a few seconds.

Some history: I earlier brought it to a local dealer when I was having hard starting issues and inconsistent idling. I asked him to check it over and replace the fuel line & fuel filter (as far as I know, it had never been replaced). He adjusted the mixture a bit (enriched the idle, leaned the high speed a bit), but said he did not find anything else wrong with it. Hard starting issues went away, but the first time I used it, after a few minutes of use, it started in with the problems I described in my second paragraph above.

I brought it to a small engine guy who also does chainsaws. He said the low might have been a little lean and enrichened it. Checked compression, said it was 110 - not great, but should run. He tested it out, and it ran OK for him. I suspect he didn't run it very long

I've tried to attach an audio file (I had to ZIP it, since the forum won't accept .M4A files)... I hope it loads OK. The odd sound is me holding the trigger at WOT. You can here it not revving up. Occasionally. it will catch and go to full revs and sound almost normal. I let off, and try to bring it back up to full revs, and it starts with the weird sound again.

This is the saw that prompted my thread asking about the 555 vs the 562XP as a replacement. I'm still going to get a new saw, but I'm wondering if it is worth putting anything in to this one to keep as a backup, or is it time to let it go.

I'll take a look. I'm going to be bummed if the dealer set it up too lean (especially since they are the only Husqvarna servicing dealer in my area now. We had 3 shops run by old timers all of whom were great, but all have passed away or retired.)

Were you able to hear that odd sound?

psi is low, but also wonder if you have the auto choke (meant auto decomp  :D) set up?

Also check and see if you have the updated metal intake clamp.  Plastic older ones warp.

Yea I heard the sound bit. Weird for sure.

Auto-choke (or was it auto-decomp?) was removed years ago. Metal intake clamp was also replaced at the same time.

I've never heard that sound on a chainsaw before. The first time I heard it, I thought I had left the chain brake on, but it's not the same sound as straining against the brake.

IT seems strange that it only happens when the saw is hot. Would a bad coil would cause that sound?

I had thought of coil when I heard it but wanted to see other things you just answered too.
110psi you need to see why.

Yeah meant auto decomp. We was just talking about auto choke on some stihl's and was in my brain.

Make sure to update when you figure it out.

first 357 were decompressed auto , you did not push the button in . Husky later scrapped that design as it was pron to leak and sometimes blow the hose that was connected to the decompressure

Well, I took it to West Hill Saw House, in West Berlin, VT. It's an hour drive from me, but I've heard he's pretty good, and I was passing within 15 minutes of his place anyway. I had played him that audio file over the phone. All he could say was "that sounds weird". I was expecting the worst: a rebuild or even a new saw. He ran it a bit, and after about 5 or 6 cuts, it started making that odd sound. Turns out it was a bad ignition module. He swapped out the module, fired it up and tuned the high speed mixture a bit, and it's running fine. $50 for parts and labor.

I've not heard what a bad ignition module sounds like before, but apparently that may not have helped me anyway, since this sound does not seem typical to anyone. He went right to the ignition when he saw how it ran OK until it heated up.

More good news: he did not test the compression, but did pull the starter cord to feel how tough it was. His opinion: "No way that compression is down to 110. I'd bet you are up close to new." I had not gotten around to opening it up to check the cylinder yet, so this was a real relief.
