First 550
« on: October 20, 2012, 01:26:25 pm »
The first 550 is in our area. Logger bought it from US. He finds the power ok but saw is hard on gas. The elevation varies alot in our area. The saw has to tune itself even if used only 2 minutes away from the last location. He is working in a low spot only 2 miles from his home on the hill. Saw retunes at each place. He  says they are minor issues but prefers his 346s.

Does a 550 have rev boost?

I don't understand any of his statements.  Two minutes could mean 8K feet in which the 346 would have to retuned as well.  The saw constantly tunes its self, in the order of several times a second.  If he is truely having an issue and the fuel consumption is even just the same as the 346, the saw has a problem.  An air leak is probable as the auto tune would dump fuel at the problem to save itself.

Was the saw run and plugged in before sold?

I doubt that the saw was setup. Came out of the US with no warranty. Saw starts, runs rich and backfires for approx 2 minutes before running reasonably well. The saw goes thru the same cycle at each location change. His 346 works fine at each place without retuning.

Our M-tronic setup works well here so I assume the Husky system should be similar in performance.

Buy from a local dealer, its worth spending alittle more up front.

I read about a 562 here in Ohio with a air leak. The autotune like Mitch was saying was throwing fuel at it trying to adjust it. Ran real rich.

Not saying your saw has air leak but the autontune seems disguise the problem trying to adjust for it.

I don't understand the statements either - this surely isn't normal.
Something is wrong, and he should stop using it until it is fixed. I agree an air leak is the most likely cause.

The last good Husky dealer we had always said, "don't buy a first year Husky, too much trouble."
He would only bring new models in on the second year of production. Smart man.

This was true before. 357 was a great example.

But now it seems they are stuck in pride and can't let this fresh air engines go. That will consume them.

Art ,  my 550 doesnot backfire at any time , It takes the saw about 20 to 30 seconds first thing in the morning to set itself then its good to go , the autotune sets itself lots lean enough for me and I'm running a 18 inch bar running 3/8's chain , that saw needs to be hooked up and set
