Fix for Husqvarna 51/55 Carb Plate/Bulkhead
« on: November 26, 2013, 01:29:24 pm »
You know the drill, somebody over tightens the carb screws in the plastic plate, strips out the holes and you are now faced with buying new plate. Can't fill and re-drill because scrap plastic will not stick to the old plate. After trying about every t:ype of fix I finally tried to find a better way.

Which came in the form of the McMaster Carr website. They have available metric internal thread brass inserts for plastic. The insert is course thread cutting extetnally for plastic. It has a slot for a straight screw driver on one end.

You drill out the carb plate from the cylinder side using a 9/32 drill, thread the insert in from the cylinder side. Do it from the back to avoid messing up the surface the carb mounts to. Then just use a metric socket head screw of the appropriate size to mount the carb and you are done!

Cheers!

P.S. They also work great for repairing stripped out top handle mounts on orange tanks!

Go to home depot and look for the spring loaded buterfly drywall anchors, throw the spring loaded thing away, but the bolts are long and come in different dia, worked for me.  I think there is enough room for a nut on the backside need be also?

Thanks for the tip!  They must know when they build them that they arent going to last?  I thought about using the inserts on that echo 600 I fixed like this, but was afraid that the insert would pull through that thin plastic and I would have an even bigger problem to fix.

The operative words here are McMaster Carr. Check the prices from them in lots or 25 much much cheaper than Husqvarna or Stihl prices.

Check also the metric socket head and T-27 torx screw prices. Most often McMaster Carr prices are less than 10% of OEM prices on a per-screw basis and the screws meet the same or better the European standards used by the OEMs. Also many special purpose fasteners (travel limiter screw for 365/372) where you would pay $3 or more each from Husky are available in quantity for far less than OEM.

We all like to do the chainsaw work but there is no reason to get **** on hardware prices by the OEMs IMHO!

They also sell a self aligning tapped insert which work great for MM projects where you need to have a removable outlet to facilitate a spark screen.
