Flywheel key
« on: October 30, 2016, 09:27:41 am »
I got a 266SE with the key sheared. Stopped by the dealer, they wanted  $1.80 for one and had to order it.

I found these from McMaster-Carr.  3mmx3.7mmx10mm
They dropped right in and fit good.
Got 25pcs for $ 7.19.
I know Husky used this same key in a bunch of different saws.

Just thought I'd share. I would guess there's a bunch of J-Red and Poulan saws that use this same key too.

Seems like false economy if the other 24 are going to sit on the shelf. I can count on one hand all the chain saw keys I have ever replaced and that is probably because I dropped and lost them. :D

I would rather have them on the shelf when I need one or lose one. Then have a saw sit because I have to wait on a part to come in.

A little bag of keys take up much less room. Than a saw that's down and in pieces.
But that's just me.

You can run saws without a flywheel key. Ran my stock 3120 without one. Had to retime the flywheel with the unlimited coil. Just make sure both tapered areas are dry, line up and tighten down.

On another note I made a flywheel key for a honda atc once in a pinch.

Thought I had lost a key yesterday on my 475 tear down. Found it. Then had the circlip fly. Found it too.

A key is relatively simple to make .It's a portion, arc of a circle from a piece of round stock.

I have to agree that McMaster-Carr  is relatively inexpensive if you buy in bulk .I order stuff from them on a regular bassis .They have a lot of stuff .

If you could find more of those keys with the same dimensions except thicker, they would be great to make offset keys(with some careful filing),to advance the ignition on whatever saws they fit. You could make them in 2 degree increments,I would love to have some(Thicker ones) to modify! Those you certainly could sell.
