Help with 338XPT
« on: May 11, 2016, 10:10:40 am »
I have worked on chainsaws for over 50 years and never ran into a problem like this.
I need a piston for a 338xpt CALIFORNIA.
This California model has a 43mm piston as opposed to 40mm standard.
40mm is readily available but not the 43mm.
I have contacted five parts houses and no one can assure me that what they have, for close to $90.00, is a 43mm piston??
I even contacted Husqvarna and gave the serial number and they couldn't help.
I gave the representative part number 537075101 and he said that part number did not show up anywhere and then gave me the exact same number as the correct part for the California model???
When I questioned him, phone went dead !
Husqvarna Parts pdf gives piston part number ---537 07 51-71 and that number is no good.
Rant over.

UPDATE---Just found one at Bailey's  Don't know if it is my age or my computers age or both, but before, when I searched, all that came up was parts diagrams?
At least I found out that Husky representative was no help.

I'll do some locating for ya.  I know its going backwards, but if nothing else find a good OEM 40mm P&C and be done with it.  Good luck.

That  might be better then paying close to 100.00 for a piston. Never done that before.
Skirt is broken on mine but cylinder looks perfect.
Thanks for any help!

Here is how I read it on my quick search. WAG =

You might sell that cylinder on Flea-bay for enough to pay for that 40mm kit since there not very common.  Someone out there may be looking for one.  Get a good quality kit when you do cause as you well know, that model is a PITA to work on.

Thanks--I guess I got a rookie rep at Husqvarna. No help whatsoever.
Bet he wouldn't even know how to start a chainsaw.

I am not in a hurry, I'll give it some time before buying a new 43.

I also have a 335XPT California with the 43mm bore.  Piston is scored.  Cylinder looks like it'll clean up (not looking forward to working on that little clammy jug though).  Haven't quite convinced myself to buy the $68+shipping piston for the little bugger either.   I'll get to it at some point.  Rest of the saw is cherry...
