That makes sense about the vent being blocked --- by chance do you know where it is located on that particular saw?

The vents are usually on the top rear of the tanks?

I don't have a 266 IPL but on the 268 it is along the top right of the tank seam.

I found the parts list. The vent is on the top right of the tank about half way.

Farmboy's file opened fine for me. I had to save it to the hard drive and then open it.

IPLs back to 1972 can be found on Huskys US website, under "Support".  ;)

First of all, thanks to everyone who posted with advice on my problem. I am pleased to report that I have this fine old saw up and running!! I obtained a carb kit locally and rebuilt the carb with no problems at all following the directions. I also cleaned out the breather hole in the gas tank and no longer had any issues with gas flow. Installed a new gas filter and presto, the saw started. Had to adjust the idle but otherwise she is running just fine now.

Once again, thanks to all who posted. ;D
