here's more pics of the piston. gotta feelin it's aftermarket. the person who put it together (and the person that opened it back up to 'clean' up the piston) must not have been using common sense and blindly followed the arrow in the wrong direction.

.....

I'm not really sure what I see there, but the symbol close to the centre of that picture makes me think KolbenSchmidt (a S superimposed over a K?  ???

it looks like a cross in a box, with the outer box missing a couple of areas, making the center cross look like an 's' sort of.

Looks like Kolbenschmidt  (K over S) to me? Look and see if the same square is on the outside of the cylinder? The "E" is for "Einlass" or inlet

the cylinder is a mahle. :)
e for intake huh? i can see how that would mess with peoples heads. right off the start e stands for exhaust is what everybody would first think. i myself have never seen a piston marked like that, but makes sense. i would have put it in with the pin on the intake side regardless  ;D

There's nothing to it . . . Hurry up and bolt the pulley on before the spring jumps out!

But I remember struggling with this some 40-50 years ago but I would eventually get it done this way.

My first attempts were trying to wind the spring up and place it in the pocket. The spring would get loose and jump all over the place.

oh yes i know those type :) then you get the ones that try and catch you when running away. had a few stitches put in from a run in with a pioneer holiday spring. that one would not sit in there. can't remember how we got that one in finally :-*
i like the pull starts that have the slot so you can just use the pulley to twist the spring in to place.

Both KolbenScmidt and Mahle made (OEM) top ends for those saws, as was the case with the 262xp.
