husky 266
« on: May 25, 2016, 07:52:17 am »
received one of these on monday night top end is there but has been removed to reveal a straight gassing saw has sat in a workshop with no cover over the exposed bottom end so I suppose a complete pull down and clean is the way to go. Cylinder may clean up its marked but not grooved. I have not worked on a modern saw as I collect the old macs but I am in need of a couple of lighter modern saws for firewooding. Also a 025 came in with the same problem except not pulled down yet which one of these saws would be best to put the effort into both  none or whichever.
currently cruising ebay checking out aftermarket parts.
A few others came with this lot a couple of low compression old stihls 08 and s10 and a few macs 2x 250 and 2x 610 plus a pro mac 5600 which is a dolmar no idea whats wrong with this one plus I got about 5 boxes of used stihl bits mainly 009 010. All came from a repairman who wanted to gain some shelf space back Oh the 266 cost 25 bucks and the 025 20 so I am not into them very far But it was the macs I wanted. I have told the guy anytime he wants to clear shelf space he knows where to find me. will get some pics up later in the week

husqvarna 266 would be my choice of the 2 you want to put money in.  66.7cc and would be a good all around saw IMO.  http://www.acresinternet.com/cscc.nsf/ed1d619968136da688256af40002b8f7/9f5525102886abf488256b52001a33af?OpenDocument

stihl 025 45cc is a good saw too. Homeowner clamshell style built and light. IMO good trim saws.

266 is a great allaround saw.  Good power not too heavy.  Plenty of used parts for them too.  Husky 61,66, 266,268,272, Jonsered 625,630,670 a lot of parts interchange.  I'm building a 266 out of NOS parts new crankcase, crank, PC, etc. it's on the rountoit list.

Thanks Kevin Thanks shep appreciate the list of saws that parts will interchange from looking online new p&c for 266 over 200 bucks but the 272 was a lot cheaper what have you guys had success with in aftermarket husky stuff. Love my old macs but cutting firewood all day with  a 10 10 or 700 with no av makes the hands buzz. The poulan I got recently is a big improvement.

I really like the 266 with a 266 p/c. I would see if you can find another one of those or go with a new 272 kit.

I would shop Ebay for OEM 266 PC or 630 PC.  Holman Tree says 630 actually cuts more wood in a day due to not having to fill up as often.  If your not in a hurry you can get one reasonable.  Last one I got $60.00 no scoring.

As far as I know, using the 272 top end does involves using a 268/272 intake and carb as well + that something has to be done about the top cover?

Yes, but there is a lot that doesn't interchange all over the model range and/or time line as well.

I'll check my used cyl drawers I might have a servicable 266.  I know I have a good 61 but that's going backwards.
