You can run a vacuum test on the engine.

Basically, you seal off the exhaust and intake.

Then pull a half atmosphere ( 15" ) and if the crankcase still has 10" after 30 seconds, the seals are OK.

Thank you fur the info 660, but i dont have a pressure tester...ugggg...i did take the carb apart, on the pump side i did have the gasket on the wrong side, the saw ran good. but still seems to flood when it dies or you ill it with the kill switch. at one point i just let it idle, after about five min. it racetd and died. i stared it again. set it on the ground and it idled fur 15 min. no problem. then at times it would just die like you hit the kill switch, some times it would start back up, some times it wouldnt. when it wouldnt start, i would take the spark plug out, some times it was dry sometime it was wet. i would clear the cylinder of gas by pullin the startin rope, ground the plug and pull start rope to get spark. i did notice when groundin the plug, if you pulled the rope kinda hard, no spark, but pull it harder and spark. could it be the coil on the low end not firin, could that be why it dies when it idles some times, like turnin the kill switck off. or wouldnt start, cousin it to flood, then i have to pull the plug and klear the cylinder. Clearin the cylinder dosent always work, some times i have to clear the cylinder twice, then it will start. the last time i started it, i would turn it off and on. on the first pull mostly, but on the second time some times it would start, i did that about 10 times in a row and it started every time...air leak or coil???

The only way to be sure would be to substitute another ignition or carburetor into the saw and I doubt you have those parts?

IIRC a tilly 260a or s will work, they are off a 272 but the same config just a little bigger.

I assume the HS-234, that was use on the early 268xp saws also will do? Venturi size is the same 17.5mm as for the -260.
