Saw Troll,
I can't find a model number, but the make is Tilloston. I do see a SN and it is:  S224AC45E. It also has the number 10 stamped on the top left corner of carb when viewed facing the HL screws. The SN is on the opposite side of the carb on the top left when facing that side. I did replace the pump and diaphragm since I had the saw down. I used the parts from a 163A kit. I did not change the needle. It looked to be in good shape. If you have any other thoughts, please share them.

Since the consensus seems to point toward my saw being a 266 model, I searched the archives here and found that my saw is very likely to be 266-1993-01, which seems to support the 266 case, and to clear up the carburetor ID issue for me. It's a 224A model Tillotson. I tried to paste the document here, but I received a message that the file is too big. I don't understand why since the post that I grabbed it from had several other files included in addition to the one I saved.

Yes, those numbers off the carb tells it is a HS-224A, which has a 17.5mm venturi, vs. the 15.9 of the HS-163. The RK kit is the same for both carbs..

The 266 used the HS-163 (or a similar size Walbro) up to some time in 1985, and the HS-224 after that.

A picture of the number tag of that saw would be interesting.....

Saw Troll,

Thanks for the additional information. I have found another source that you and many other forum participants probably already now about, but in case other newbies like my could benefit. The name of the business is Simonian's Saw Service. He has some Meteor kits available for various saws.

Yes, Simonians is well known to me and many others, and their Meteor kits some times a topic on different forums.  ;)

Saw Troll,

Today I regressed and put my saw back together and installed the original piston and cylinder. I never did check the compression after I noticed the scoring on the piston and cylinder. I just didn't think of it due my lack of experience. I attempted to check the compression with my gauge, but I could not obtain an accurate reading. I had air leaks somewhere because I could only get 30psi, and I know it has more compression than that.

I decided to go ahead and see if it would start and after a few pulls it did. I let it idle for a few seconds and then tapped it a few times and shut it down. Next I began the bar/chain installation and I ran into a problem. I couldn't get the clutch brake back on. I've never had a moments trouble with it until now, but after looking at a few youtube videos tonight I must have tripped the spring. I'm going to give in another try tomorrow.

My plan is to test the saw and see if it still bogs down under a load after installing the new carburetor parts, fuel line, and filter. If it runs good my problem may be solved for awhile. If it doesn't, I'll make sure I get an accurate compression test done and go from there.

Btw, I measured the piston and the diameter is 50mm. That's another indication of the 266 model.

Thanks for all of your help.

For members who have been following my posts, I have good news. I did have the clutch band locked and I was able to fix it quick thanks to YT. I put the chain on this morning and started the saw. It runs well, but I haven't adjusted the carburetor for optimum rmp, but that's next. I do have a good tach and this morning I saw a maximum rpm of around 10,500 before it started 4 stroking. I completed a quick test cut on a stump and the saw performed very well without hesitation or bogging. Needless to say, I'm very pleased. I've learned a lot through this forum ,and without the help, I'm sure it would have taken much more time to repair my saw.

Unless someone can enlighten me I'm sticking with the 266 as being my model. I'm basing this on the Tillotson 224A carburetor, the Mahle closed port cylinder, and the 50mm Mahle piston. If you know of any there are other indicators that I can check please let me know.
