OK, there are two different sizes of screws that hold the top handle to the saw. The long one goes through the handle to the AV mount on the cylinder, the other four go in the bottom two mounting positions on the clutch side of the saw, the other two go through he handle into the bottom of the tank/handle unit. Save the white shipping spacer as it will come in handy if you want to ship the saw without the bar. Just start all the screws without tightening until they are all where they belong then tighten them up. A 4mm Allen 'T' handle is the tool of choice; available at Harbor Freight!

Look for the 'T' handle here:

Too many beers o tell you bout the felling dogs tonight, I'll post again in the AM!

When you post can you tell me if the long screw you're talking about is the long black one that has a nut attached to it and goes through the handle? In the pictures it looks like it goes into the circle just below the AV mount but doesn't attach to anything.

Thanks for clarifying.

You are correct, the screw you are talking about is the travel limiter, and it does go directly below the screw that attaches the handle to the cylinder mounted av buffer. It actually attaches to the handle only and does go nto the ring in the case.

Have a look here for the inner felling dog assembly and attachment:
http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=husqvarna&mn=576+XP+%282008-08%29&dn=084610014

The outer dog slips over the bar studs after the clutch cover and is usually held to the cover by a small self tapping black screw.

I appreciate the help. When you say travel limiter what travel is it limiting? It seems to just go in that big hole in the case but not serve a purpose?

Besides that it's nice to have it all together correctly. The diagrams posted were a huge help.

Husqvarna makes different types of av mounts, some soft some very stiff. The saw looks pretty stiff just hanging on to it but in the wood it moves aroundso the travel limiter keeps the movement within control.

Ahh very good. I have two saws... one is the 455e Rancher and one is the 576... I'm real comfortable with the smaller one but am taking a cautious approach with the big one. Never operated a saw that big and don't want to do anything stupid.

Thanks.

I know this is an old thread but i bought one of my saws on ebay and it came fully assembled ... just needed to put on bar and chain ... that lil spacer under the clutch cover had me stumped for like 10 minutes !!!
