HUSKY 455 Muffler Mod
« on: October 27, 2013, 10:54:13 pm »
Hey guys. New here. Was wondering about my 455 muffler. It's a solid piece (does not come apart). The only thing I can see that's obvious is pull the spark screen out. What's the next step and do I need to worry about messing with the carb?

Thanks in advance.

By the way, I guess I should add that, the reason I'm kinda confused is that the cover over the spark screen is welded on, so I cannot take it off and open more holes like I've seen others do. the muffler itself is factory-crimped together so I can't pull it apart.

Yea your right those type of mufflers are really a pain to modify.

I myself because I have a welder will usually grind the edge down until I break through the crimp.   I separate the two halves make my modifications and then weld it back together.   It is a lot of work but the modification  turns out well.    Just a reminder that you cannot cut in national forest land or other federal land with out a spark arrestor in your muffler.   I myself always leave one in.

10-4 on the spark arrestor.

Any ideas on how big a hole to cut or where to cut it?

I have a 455 but have not got around to modifying the muffler on it yet.   If you get it apart just open up the baffle inside and then add another port or open up the one on the muffler some more.

Can I just leave the factory baffle and port alone, and cut an extra hole/port in the side of the muffler?

Or is it better to modify the baffle and the one port?

You get more power with opening up any internal baffles as well as the extra port on the outside.

Should I try to remove the baffle completely?

Has anybody ever tried a bunch of tiny (maybe 1/16") ports?

Not that I know of.    I usually double the opening of the  baffle and open the exhaust another 25 to 30 percent.

Thanks for all the info.

If I wanted to remove the factory deflector, is their any way without drilling out the spot welds? Otherwise I'll leave it in place and do my best reaching in through the inlet port with my Dremel, I guess.

Will my 455 manual tell me anything about tuning the carb?
