Chainsaw Repair

Hi All,

Just inherited a 545 from a family friend and it's not starting... taken out the spark plug and nothing! tried a new spark plug and the exact same thing happens... no spark!
the odd thing is that if i try the spark plug in my mower (wrong size but wanted to test the electrics) it sparks just fine!

So, my question is, is this a spark plug issue or is it an ignition coil issue? or a combination?

I have another 545 available to me and i was trying to remove the ignition coil from the one i've inherited but it seems you have to pull apart the entire saw to do that? is the coil likely to be the issue? If so is there a better way to replace it?

Have you checked all the simple stuff like connections and traced the wires to the on/off to the coil etc?

Then check coil gap?

If still no go try a know good coil.  Least that is what I do.

Just pull recoil cover and air deal under cover. Then 2 bolts usually hold coil. Very simple.  Just use a business card to set coil gap.

I've checked connections, cleaned up what i can, checked gaps etc and still with the original spark plug i get nothing but with a bigger plug it sparks!

I want to try a different coil but i'm having troubles getting the old coil out... i can't find a convenient way of removing the cable that goes into the white junction box, it seems too hard to get to. I'm reluctant to rip the whole thing apart as knowing my luck it will ever go back together again! Is there an easy way to get to the coil connectors?
