Here are a couple of things

55s have a rubber grommet that acts as a seal on the pulse tube that is moulded into the carb plate and they use a rubber tube between the carb plate and the intake spigot on the cylinder. If either of these are leaking then the saw will not run right.

You mention that you have changed or rebuilt the card several times, it is possible that the self tapping screws that hold the carb to the carb plate have stripped out the carb plate holes and you have an air leak where the carb meets the carb plate.

Does this behavior apple only when the saw gets hot? Because erratic running on a hot saw is caused by a failing coil. Marginal Coils tend to fail when they get hot.
