Lacking a compression release sucks on some over 60cc saws.

Quite possibly the points are set a tad wide on the gap and advanced the timing.

On some of my hard kickers (Homelite XP-1000) I leave the ignition off for two or three pulls with the choke set.  Turn on the ignition and set half choke and pull to start.  A rich mixture has less tendency to kick back.

I have a 281 that I couldn't start for that reason so I put a D handle on the rope. ;)
