Its up to you but upgrading to a 350, 353 will cost around the same as a 345 cly/piston if you need to replace the cylinder too.  Whats your budget?  I may be able to help you out.

Thanks for the advice. I am leaning toward the bigger bore, but feel a little apprehensive about making the rebuild more complicated.
Those $20 aftermarket kits are scary. I have no clue as to which kits are quality. OEM is off the table as they seem to be in the $250 range.  Is there an aftermarket mfr or parts house that I should be looking at?

As far as the cause of the failure, I really don't know. I don't know how to detect an air leak. The intake has the metal clamp and showed no signs of leakage. I am very careful with my fuel. The only thing I can think of is that my loacl saw shop had recently put in a new carb and could have it adjusted too lean.

One more question. Is it a normal thing to pull the crank and service it "while I'm in there"?

By all means avoid cheap aftermarket kits.

The saw will of course not become a 346xp with a 346 kit, but with the OEM one it will perform like one.

Don't rebuild it before you have found out what failed, the booth clamp is far from the only option!

If you have not bought already, I would seriously consider a Rod Simonian 346 kit from 3r sports on flee-bay.  I have installed 3 of those kits, and there all still running strong.   I believe they are as good as OEM.  Quality is top notch.  Far better than any other Asian kit out there. I couldn't swear by it, but they look like Meteor.   I compaired there 346 cylinder with an OEM 346 NE, and could find no difference.  Even went so far as checking the timing degrees of the 2 on a degree wheel and both came out about the same numbers.  Its been 3 years ago I put that one on my neighbors 340 and he's still running it, and he uses it a lot.  They come with everything you need, base plate included.  Many of the parts he includes in the kit are OEM.  He has only 1 kit left.  The item number is; 290817539780.  Its $165 + $10 shipping.  Check it out before the kit sells.  It will run SO much better than a stock 345 clamshell P/C.  Close to a 346xp.  Its whatever you deside.

Yeah that kit would be the way to go. Thanks for the info wild262. I'd love to do that BB kit, but my funds are exceptionally limited right now.
I went with the highest quality stock parts I could afford. I have it back together and bucked a 16" dia oak log no problem.
I'd still like to do that 45mm kit. If it's still there when I come up with the cash....

Glad to here you got it back running Dave.  You can never go wrong with OEM parts.  Smart move.  And you saved yourself lots of money doing it yourself.  If you have anymore trouble, were all here to help ya.   :)  Enjoy !
