Husqvarna 141 gas tank possibly dissolving?
« on: August 16, 2014, 05:18:32 pm »
Hello all - KRL suggested I post this over here.

Background on this saw - it belongs to my neighbor.  He had problems getting past half throttle - it sat at someone's shop for 2 months and the guy couldn't figure it out, he asked me to take a shot at it.  Anyways the first time I opened the carb I found a strange orange, almost gel like substance in the bowl.
Carb cleaned, new intake & impulse pipe, cleaned tank etc.   I filled it with a bottle/can of premix - his fuel - tuned in and running well.

It ran well for a while then exhibited some flooding issues.

I opened the carb to find more of this orange gel ???  It must have stuck the needle open and now there is some back in the jets - which is what I thought happened originally
The filter is OEM original as far as I know.

Below is some pictures of the strange substance.  I have it evaporating now to see if it is water based, it's heavier than the fuel anyways

That's rusty water! The county health department well inspector would call it BIOLOGICAL IRON and it gets to be a jelly like substance because of the growth inside it.

Better use a different fuel

Rust in a plastic fuel tank? It looks much more orange not cloudy almost like propylene glycol
FWIW I rinsed the tank during the initial repairs.

It could be rust in his canned premix - I'll have to get a hold of that bottle

Take his premix - shake it up - pour some in a clear glass container and let it set 24 hr. and see what you got? The rust came from somewhere else. I would say if the mix was 10% gasohol that it had considerable water in it to precipitate out like that. If it was pure gasoline with no alcohol, any water would readily drop out and precipitate within a few seconds.

The iron is in a microbial form and is almost like a jelly?

If that stuff gets around brass, it will usually turn the brass black.

Bet it was just old mix left over and over and not from the canned mix they are using in it now. The junk just got mixed in with the canned stuff.

There is the possibility that this stuff was introduced at the original repair shop or plated out when the saw sat at My neighbors place for who knows how long.
The tank has shown  no signs of this orange residue since a triple flush and refill.

I am still having issues with it getting past 1/4 throttle, the main jet does not seem to be pulling & atomizing fuel.

Saw has new: Impulse pipe, Intake boot, fuel filter & line, carburetor ultrasonic cleaning and reassembly.
Original vacuum & pressure test led me towards the impulse pipe.

Could the carb butterfly penetrations leak enough to cause a loss of vacuum? I hate to spend much more time & money on this saw - he has 2 others that he never uses anyways
guy buys wood for an outdoor fireplace with 8 acres full of trees that need cleaned up

Isnt the 141 one of the saws with the known carb issues.   Aaron and BB know these better.
