This is the non-windowed piston.  The correct piston for open port cylinders.

This is the windowed piston.  The correct part for the close port cylinders.

Meteor (and Northwoods Saw......as they're just repeating the info from the Meteor index) incorrectly states that this Meteor 1646 piston is correct for the 268S and 268K (which are open port)...

http://northwoodsaw.com/store/index.php?l=product_detail&p=36

http://www.meteorpiston.com/Lists/Gardening/Catalog.aspx

Interestingly, Meteor catalogs two seemingly identical 50mm Husqvarna windowed pistons.  1314 and 1646.  At least on the Baileys website, the 1314 looks to be the current slug (they no longer carry 1646).  I have a 1646A in a box waiting to go into my 268XP.  It is windowed (looks just like a 272XP slug aside from the diameter) and has "1646" cast on the underside of one skirt.

In some listings, the 1314 is listed for the closed port 266SE and Jonsered 670 saws, while the 1646 is listed for the 268 (and sometimes incorrectly for the open port 268Special and 268K demo saws).

http://www.baileysonline.com/shop.axd/ProductDetails?edp_no=143267&CAT=

To further confuse things.........Baileys lists the 1646 as being a replacement for Husky 501659403.  Baileys lists the 1314 as being a replacement for Husky 501658803.  Ereplacementparts lists the Husky 501659403 as being the replacement for Husky 501658803.  By association............that would mean that Meteor 1646 is the replacement for (or is interchangeable with) Meteor 1314....

Thanks for all your efforts, if you were to build a saw would you go with closed or open ports? The guy I bought the saws off said he prefers closed ports because they traditionally have more torque.

Since your saw is tore down, go with the closed port cyl. and windowed piston.  You will have a boost in power over the open port style.  Afterwards you will enjoy 268xp and 670 power.   ;D

Yep.  There are some very strong open port designs out there.  In this case, the closed port cylinder is stronger however.  If you have a good usable 266SE/XP or 268XP closed port cylinder then that's the one to use here (with a windowed piston).

Cheers, I'll take your advice. I have 61, 266 and 272 barrels about 5 of each. Also 6 cases and five cranks, lots of scope to mess around with these saws.

Might want to keep those 272 jugs as they will fit the 266 case.  It requires a lot of part swapping which you may not want to do right now.  Besides, going with the 266/268 closed port cyl. & windowed piston will get you very, very close to 272 in power.   I have built both and they are very close, so not worth the extra trouble really, unless you want it to be different.

I'll build the 272 on a 272 case because I only have the inlet for one and I'll build  a couple of  266s first. I have the aluminium chainbrakes for them , I quite like the look of those.

heres what I know about the 266/268,  I have never seen in life or a picture of an early open port 50mm jug but they could be out there.  the straight 268 had nice quad open ports in a gilardoni jug, I believe it to be a later design like many poulans 42 special and 246.  the 266's I have seen have a smaller combustion chamber and closed port transfers and were coupled with the 181 style piston.   The 268xp had larger closed port transfers and combustion chamber and a 272 style piston.

I thought the xp had a different cylinder and the ad said they were all 266 parts, my mistake .So the open ports are more likely to be 268 cylinders? Should I use those ones instead?

Thanks for the links btw, very useful.
The open port 50 mm top ends were used on the 66 and on the "plain" 268 (not the xp or Special).
