Husqvarna 288 Coil Set
« on: March 19, 2015, 12:39:40 pm »
I found a set of coils for a 288. They are blue. Does that mean it is a rev limited coil??? If so what year did they stop making the basic black set.

Thanks
Jason

Unless someone put a new coil in it,  than I would say No.  I have a old 181 with a set of original coil and they are blue as well.  Most all of the 181,281 & 288 saws I have seen had the blue colored coils.  If a guy had to buy a new OEM one (if you could), I'm not so sure.  Maybe someone else knows.   However, many of the post 2000 saws do have the blue "limited" coils, mostly e-tec 340's to 353's.  The black ones are not limited, so far! ;)

If the set you found has numbers on it, then run them to see what they fit.  If there are no numbers, they may be aftermarket, and would  be hard to tell.  Do some research. Happy hunting.

There were no rev limited 181-288 ignitions.  Color doesn't matter with them.  Same ignition setup was also used on the 238/242/42/246/etc...

Aaron,

So why did they use two piece for the 288XP and i piece for the 272XP?

is the 2 piece just older tech, right after points?

When the 181SE was designed, the 162/61/66/266 were still using a 2 piece ignition (although a different, unrelated 2 piece ignition that won't interchange with the 181-288 series).  Shortly after that, Husky had to  tool up for a different FW side case half on the 181 for a larger bearing and seal.  They then used the same cases through the 181/281/288 production.  Maybe they didn't want to bother retooling that series again to accept the one piece ignition.  The 230/242/42/246/etc series also used the 2 piece ignition through the whole run.

When the 266XP was replaced by the 268XP, Husky retooled for a different FW side case half that accepted the new one piece ignition that was also used on the 50-55 series, some other Huskys, and some other Electrolux saws.  An unrelated change was also the elimination of the removable FW side seal carrier.  This case design (and the one piece ignition) was used through the remaining 268XP/272XP/61/268Special production.

The 'under the flywheel' SEM/FEMSA/Bosch electronic ignitions (which are 'one piece') used on the 285/1100/2100/298/2101 (and some other older Huskys, and on some Stihls and other saws) were certainly 'older tech' than the 2-piece systems used on the 181-288 and 42/242/etc families.  Heck, Homelite was putting "transistorized" electronic ignitions on some of their saws in the late 1960's (Followed by McCulloch and others)......long before Husky switched to electronic ignitions.  Those early electronic ignitions were crap for the most part....... but that's another thread...

I would say 38" first to see how it handles it.  You going to use a full tooth chain, half or full skip?  Hardwood or soft.  That makes a big difference.

Most guys run 28"-36" bars on 288XPs.  I run a 32" bar with skip sequence 3/8" chisel.
