You should be OK with 38" skip tooth 3/8" chain. But that arrangement is what I would consider max.   42" is pushing the limits for that saw in my opinion.  If you did, it would be slow going.

When the 181SE was designed, the 162/61/66/266 were still using a 2 piece ignition (although a different, unrelated 2 piece ignition that won't interchange with the 181-288 series). 

FYI, 181/288 ignition module can easily be adapted to 61/266 with a small bracket, works with either coil.

You should be fine.  That's more bar than I like to run on these, but it'll pull and oil it if you're not too aggressive with it.
