Why do some have the spring in the front and some don't?  what does the spring do?
what was changed from the 181 to the 281/288

I have some 181 and 281 part saws what will and will not interchange?

Thanks David

You can download the IPL's for the 181/281/288 saws from the Husqvarna website.

As for the spring, the 288 Lite doesn't have the AV spring in front of the saw.  That was done to save weight.  It's there for additional support when you're running longer bars.

Any progress with that saw?  If you decide to send it down the road let me know.  I'd like to add a low-top 288XP with a decomp to the stable.  Not that I NEED another saw however......:D

AFAIK all 181 and 281 parts interchange w/288.  There is one diff. I know about.  There is a crankcase diff in the early 181 takes a diff flywheel seal than the later 181-288.  There may be more but I don't know about.  I think that's the only one.

yup, 'tis true....the flywheel side of the early 181's had smaller crankshaft bearing.   (not good idea)
