Husqvarna 3120XP Sprocket Pin Sizes
« on: October 12, 2012, 03:52:39 pm »
I am curious as to how many sprocket pin options there are for Husqvarna 3120XP chainsaw, i.e. 7 pin, 8 pin, 9 pin, 10pin  ????

One of my 3120's runs a 24 inch bar and the engine has enough power to run a lot more chain speed, which should give faster speed in the cut, requiring me to spend less time hanging onto the saw.

If different pin options are available, where can they be purchased?

Lots of folks on here can help you out with this.
The largest rim sprocket Husqvarna has to offer for this saw is 8T -3/8, 7T-.404 but Oregon does offer a 8T-.404 rim which I have several of.
What size of guide bar and size of wood do you cut?
There are aftermarket rim sprockets available in almost any size you want. Madsen's out of Centralia, Washington sells these rims. Be warned though these rims are not as durable as a Oregon or Stihl factory rim because of their pressed pin design but do get the job done.

Unless someone else out there knows of a better aftermarket rim with a factory cast design, this is the best advice I can give you.

That big homelite in my avatar and both my 125 Macs run 8 pin .404. A 3120 would have no problem at all with an 8 pin and a 36" bar if wanted it to .

Now I've seen custom made spurs that would mount on a rim drive system up to ten count .I have no idea who made them .

Here you go Al, this guy is from your neck of the woods: T.R.[Terry]Cullins
                                                                                      39220 Hemlock Grove Rd.
                                                                                      Hemlock Grove, Ohio 45738
                                                                                      [614] 992-5992
Terry built me some beautiful made standard 7 spline 3/8 eleven tooth and thirteen tooth spur sprockets back in the early 1980's.
I haven't talked to him since 1983 but he's probably still around.

The actual spur itself would not be hard to do .Broaching  the splines for the drive would be a real challange .Larry S had a 10 spur gear on a saw I think that was done by Ken Dunn .I think it was souped 090 .I ran the thing but oddly can't remember what it was .John Lambert also had a tall gear deal but I can't remember that one either .Fact as I think back big Dave N had an 066 with a ten spur 3/8"

What everyone has to remember when you get into those tall gears you have to have a modified bar with more heel to it else it will fling chains .Not good at all .

Ha I tried to pull a ten pin type on a Mac 125 in .404 .It would pull it but it didn't like it .It was one of those deals where the thing was one unit, drum and drive were one piece .That was about the time I came to the realization not to  use a 125 McCulloch as a cookie cutter and use it for what it was built for ,big wood .

Yes for those big sprockets you have to cut the tail of the bar to match and keep the two as close together as you can.

To add to my last post Terry from Hemlock Grove built these custom spur sprockets with a 7 spline bore from 9T -13T 3/8[.375] He also had an assortment of 1/2".
These are 1983 prices but his 11T sprocket cost me $55 and the 13T $65 ;)

I live in Melbourne, Australia, so would have to get the parts shipped out here.

I would love to experiment with a 9 pin, 10 pin and 11 pin.
I'm using a 58 thou, 24 inch bar and .404 chain on the 3120.

I think what you are going to find is if you get up above a 9 tooth on a stock engine you aren't going to gain much .Every engine has a torque band where they run the best . Taller  gears while in some instances can help may in fact bog the engine to the point they don't cut as well .Oh the engine will pull it but it never gets in that "sweet spot "

Of course you can compensate that by cutting the raker depths less aggressive .Might be an idea if you were racing the thing but a whole lot of fiddling around just for normal wood cutting .

I agree with Al, racing is one thing wood cutting for work is another. Fabian with your stock 3120 and .404 I'd run a 8T .404 Oregon rim. You would have a 7T rim at the moment.

The .404 setup is good for a work saw of that size. .404 chain is not cheap though on this side of the pond anyways.

My 3120 only has a baby small 24 inch bar. You would think that it should easily pull a 9T or 10T ???
