UPDATE on Husqvarna 338XPT
« Reply #10 on: June 21, 2016, 03:18:11 pm »
Finally made the decision to build the 338. This is the California model that has a larger piston, 43mm as opposed to 38 and 40mm.
Read some opinions about this model and they sounded good.
I modified the muffler outlet with a round tube exit and basically improved the restriction. I then removed the carb limiters.
Ring end gap was OK at .008.
I took the saw out and it started on the third pull. Had a little problem with the carb adjustment, but it now cranks on second pull and idles perfectly, with slight four stroking out of cut.

I was not happy----with new bar and chain it is out cut by a modded Echo 330t with re-sharpened chain!
I even removed and plugged the automatic compression release, but it ran no different.
Some reviews compared this 338 to a Stihl 200t--I didn't even bother to crank the 200.

I think the greatest problem with this saw is the carb and intake system. Before building, I looked over the bolt on intake manifold and tube and could see no way to enlarge the inside diameter that's about the size of a dime. I guess this was done for emissions requirements in Ca.
When I have time, I will pursue the carb/intake a little further.
