Husqvarna 350 build comparisons
« on: May 26, 2014, 06:43:50 am »
Three 350's all put together differently to see if I could quantify the effect of some changes.
"Fugly 350"... the subject of that last series of video's where I hacked up an aftermarket cylinder
"Farmer Jones" build with no base gasket, flat top piston, and muffler mod.
"Simple Man" build with just no base gasket & opened up stock muffler.

Tested them with the same bar and chain (Oregon bar & semi chisel chain)... just swapped it from saw to saw. The test log is hard sugar maple about 18 inches in DIA. Same gas, same temp, same day!

The only thing missing in that video was that I was not there enjoying the woods also.

I watched the videos you made and very interesting.
With the saws I have and some of the mods I have done I believe the single best mod that you made would have been the muffler mods.    Removing the base gasket does help but a good muffler mod will show a larger percentage in gain.

Also removing a base gasket without the muffler mod would probably be less effective.

I'd like to come out your way some time weimedog. Looks like you have a lot of room to play. I have my 350 build I'd like to see how it runs compared to some others. Got a guy I know who does carving giving it some run time at the moment as I don't have much to be cut to see how the reliability end holds up. But if you ever want to run them shoot me a PM, looks like you and Spike60 have some fun out there. Nice video, as always also.  ;D

I am with 3000FPS, the MM, was probably the biggest gain. All three run very well for what little you have done to them. I also like that your cuts were 'real world', I know that keeping the bar straight across the log will yield more consistent times than rocking back and forth but nobody cuts like that when they are making firewood or clearing land, only old racers like Kevin!

How far have you gotten on the KTM restoration, Walter?

thank you, and saw enthusiasts are always welcome! bob comes up every couple of months, maybe we can have a "saw repair.com" gtg. I have plenty to do! Plan another load of maple this next month or so.

Have a completely rebuilt set of shocks on the way, even painted like the original courtesy of Drew Smith of Enduro & WER fame  and Joe Chod of AHRMA & the Husqvarna Gathering fame. They are ding another "Husqvarna Gathering" (Like a chainsaw GTG on steroids) later this summer

AND relative to rocking the saw. Exactly. No one does that and also why I do a average of a few cuts replicating how I would typically use the saw. In my older 372 videos I used to put one straight cut in for comparison. usually using the bucking spikes produced a faster cut. On these cuts I wasn't certain the bar was long enough for a straight cut .... it was in retrospect..
