how does a tight gap keep the saw from running?

I was hoping someone would be able to tell me.   It's ran for 6 months like this before the issue of no start.

I just wonder how it was running before the no start, power wise? Makes me wonder if the spark was weak or what, even though my tester just shows spark.  Just glad putting the correct gap fixed that part or she would have been pulled down further.
