I think the coil was touching just enough to short it out. I wasn't making a noticeable mark on the coil armature or the flywheel. It didn't always touch but the bearing eventually became loose enough that it did. Most likely the coil armature and the flywheel only touched when the magnets both came around as that was when the magnetic attraction was the strongest.
