Husqvarna 371xp ported
« on: August 07, 2013, 05:34:18 pm »
Got in a husqvarna 371 that has been ported on the bench. No start.   Only pulls 148psi which seems low for a tightened up squish saw running sealant for base gasket.
Pulled muffler single ring piston and very slight scoring on both side of exhaust.  I still think it should start with 148psi but it wont. Tried prime in sparkplug and through carb. Maybe ring is pinned on both sides.  ???

I had an ms290 recently that pulled 130psi and started and revved and tuned out perfect but died in the cut. Pulled the muffler and it was scored as much as you could see through the exhaust. Couldn't believe it. I agree with you.

Good looking saw! It's a shame it's having trouble.

On the 371, the scoring and compression for a modified saw is not good but it should start and run with that much compression.

I'd be looking at fuel and spark.

I have a worn out 365 that I bet has less than 120 lbs compression and it starts and runs fine. Just not good power.

I already done the fuel and spark.  Looks good.  Going to try again when I got more time.

Left everything off  if it was flooded before hand.  de-comp, muffler, sparkplug, etc all off to air.

I had a 372 with 120psi that ran good.  Thats why the curve  ???. I am thinking ring must be stuck or ??

Thinking back I had a partner 5000 plus fool me like this once.  Had great compression and feel pulling over pop pop pop. If you know what I mean.  single ring again and just stuck in 1 area with slight score in that area of ring.

I swear by just looking at this cylinder over on saw it was a aftermarket cylinder that was ported, not oem.  Will grab pics later.

Going to plug the de-comp off and try to start in a few. If she no go, pulling the topend to check to see if the darn ring is in fact stuck.

If it is OEM, it will say "MAHLE" on it.

The fins are different on a true 371 cylinder compared with a 372 cylinder

That saw, has a 371 sticker on the starter and has a 371 top cover with the proper 371 sticker on the top cover.

Looks to be a 371 clutch cover.

The orange retainers for the air filter cover are 371

The bolts holding the top handle on are from the hardware store

XPW spikes

I got pics of outside cylinder.  No mahle anywhere.

Also before pulling cylinder I had another thought.  Called owner and ran it by him I got a ok to do.

Anyhow the saw has spark and fuel and pops a couple times.  So I start thinking timing.  Pull it down again get ready to remove flywheel then I thought to myself I will check timing before pulling fly off.  It all seemed normal except one thing I noticed by eyeing it.  Coil gap looked real tight. So I tried to slide a business card in there and bingo.  Loosen coil and Set gap fired up.  No marks where it had contacted the flywheel etc.

Retuned carb and seems good so far.  Checked squish on front and rear with cyl still attached, before all of the above and was getting 18.5-20 squish which is super tight for only 148psi.  IMO.
