371 runs and cuts good IMO.  Cutting the same ash log I been testing in.

Glad you figured it out! I have never heard of this before which is great because I never knew you could have it too tight.

Yes after reading this, how does a tight gap keep the saw from running?  I did not think it would throw the timing off.
I have a saw that I dropped the cylinder on and could no longer get a business card in for the gap and since it was not hitting I left it alone.   The saw runs fine.

I got pics of outside cylinder.  No mahle anywhere.

Also before pulling cylinder I had another thought.  Called owner and ran it by him I got a ok to do.

Anyhow the saw has spark and fuel and pops a couple times.  So I start thinking timing.  Pull it down again get ready to remove flywheel then I thought to myself I will check timing before pulling fly off.  It all seemed normal except one thing I noticed by eyeing it.  Coil gap looked real tight. So I tried to slide a business card in there and bingo.  Loosen coil and Set gap fired up.  No marks where it had contacted the flywheel etc.

Retuned carb and seems good so far.  Checked squish on front and rear with cyl still attached, before all of the above and was getting 18.5-20 squish which is super tight for only 148psi.  IMO.

I agree with that tight of squish I would expect up around 180 to 200 psi on the compression.

how does a tight gap keep the saw from running?

I was hoping someone would be able to tell me.   It's ran for 6 months like this before the issue of no start.

I just wonder how it was running before the no start, power wise? Makes me wonder if the spark was weak or what, even though my tester just shows spark.  Just glad putting the correct gap fixed that part or she would have been pulled down further.

I think the coil was touching just enough to short it out. I wasn't making a noticeable mark on the coil armature or the flywheel. It didn't always touch but the bearing eventually became loose enough that it did. Most likely the coil armature and the flywheel only touched when the magnets both came around as that was when the magnetic attraction was the strongest.

Seems to me those grapes are from the root stock and not from the graft? They were more like muscadines or mustang grapes and were good too - just not what was intended.

As far as I know, the 371 may have a different intake from the 372, and it also is more likely that it has the smaller HD-6 carb, and not the HD-12.

My 371 has a HD12B but I didn't buy it new. 371's are pretty old and some things may have been changed on them for mine also has a 372 cylinder and not a 371 not that there are any internal differences.
