Husqvarna 394xp photos - New Cylinder?
« on: March 09, 2016, 04:58:03 pm »
I am digging in to an old (late 90's) 394xp that starts/runs well, but suffers from lack of power. Here are some photos of the cylinder and piston. The piston replacement is a given. How bad does this cylinder look?

-Thanks

Looks like something I could and would clean up to use myself.   But I have seen far worse cleaned up and used.

Sweet! I saw your mandrel and scotch brite disc method for stripping the transfer - looks pretty slick! I'll give it a shot. I would be pretty pumped to get this old beast back in action! She's been on the bench for a couple years now... sad.
Thanks a bunch!

Not me I still do mine by hand.  That was Randy and he learned about that way from Wiggs.

Gotcha, my bad.
What do think about that piston? The intake skirt is thinner than the exhaust side. Intake also has the wide patterned grooves. Exhaust has a small bit of transfer. Rings were not tight.

Clean up the cylinder and if there is no grooves in it after you get rid of the aluminum your good.   The piston skirt looks like it is pretty grooved to me.   I think I would try and find another piston.    I still clean my cylinders the old fashion way.   Using acid and scotch bright.   Then I do a quick clean up with a ball hone.

I've got 2 NOS OEM 394 pistons.  Would part with one reasonable.  PM me if interested.
