Basically the same for sure, but I don't know the details. Both were a "lesser" (likely open port) version of the 242/242xp.

So what model do I use for bar and chain fitment? The oregon OPEfor1 and Stihl bar chain catalogs dont have a 42 listed for a model. They have 242 but there 2 types chain used. 325 058 or 3/8 050. What max size of bar length can be used? 20in bar?

What bar is on the chainsaw now?

If no bar what is the chain pitch of the sprocket?  - Take a chain and fit it around the sprocket and see if all the drivers on the chain will mesh with the teeth of the sprocket or rim, you have the pitch chain.

Th wrong chain will obviously not fit the sprocket.

To know what pitch your chain is, measure the distance across three chain rivets and divide by two.

Chain sprockets are not sensitive to chain gage, i.e. .050", .058", or .063". but chainsaw bar are?

In this area you can not give away .058 gage chain or bars but in the North Eastern states, every one uses .058" gage.

And can you get any numbers from the bar?

The bar is well used. All I could make out was 058. The chain 2B stamped on each of the drag links.
