So where would the air be at? crank seals? bad gasket/diaphram on the carb?

it has a lot to do with the idle. if the low is set too rich, you won't get it to idle low enough without it loading up and stalling. if it's too lean, you won't be able to open the throttle up enough to keep a steady speed and the idle will fall off as it runs out of enough liquid fuel. if you can't get it to idle low enough without it either dying or the chain moving, you might have an airleak playing games with you.
there's nothing here on these saws that is rocket science. if the crank isn't chewed up from a bad drum bearing, and there isn't any 'glaze' on the crank where the bearing contacts (you did use a scotchbrite pad on the crank where the bearing runs didn't you? and you oiled it right?) and the bearing is new, and there isn't any binding between the clutch and drum or crank. the chain should stay put if the idle is in the right area.
that being said: on these little saws, the idle has to be up pretty high for the chain to start moving. I've had them idle as high as 3400-3500 and the chain is just barely starting to twitch.

I have no idea why my post did this :)

I had those that twich regardless as the springs had run hot and lost tension. With the ones with conventional spring and three shoes you generally have a lot higher rpm before it engages.

that very well may be. and I didn't read anywhere here that he changed the clutch or the springs. might be the next step. however it should be pretty easy to have a look at the clutch with the cover off and the saw running. if the springs are the culprit, you'll see the shoes hitting the drum at idle.

that's one of the problems with the 42. they can leak everywhere. there's more places for a leak to happen on these than a chunk of swiss cheese has holes. you'd need to do a pressure/vac test to see. pull the bar and chain, leave the clutch cover off and start it up. get it to idle low enough and look to see if the clutch shoes are contacting the drum. if they're grabbing it, you might want to get a new set of springs or a new clutch.

The clutch spring is new as I said in post #62. Its long spring not the little springs.

Think this is resolved now. I dont know it happened but I found the bar nut was loose. So I tightened up the chain and bar nut. Started it up and the moving chain is no longer happening now. I guess I could've got distracted right when I was getting ready to tighten up the bar nut after replacing the clutch spring a month ago. Whats a good asking price for this saw?

Thanks

yeah I didn't see that post :) but still, even with the chain loose it shouldn't be moving. hope this works for you.

Bumping old thread
42 vs 42 special
Husqvarna Norway claim it was just a gimmick and there was no difference in later 90's
Other claim there was several difference between 42 vs ,42

i would like to know whitch difference, what stamps the jug had, what piston 42 vs 42 special had. If any have pictures please post them.

i have 2 Husky 42, 90 97,
The 90 have gilardoni 7 jug
The 97 have gilardoni 241 å jug
sucking Norway dry for oil money!

It seen that 133/444/44/234/238/242/246 are history
More and more parts are NLA.
Piston is NLA in US, same with the famous bearing, NLA.
We still have piston but bearing and gasket set are NLA
Wish I knew in whitch direction going.

Meteor piston look different, dunno if any have seen it, reminds me of normal 42,
