1988 Husky 50 new coil
« on: May 07, 2017, 09:22:38 am »
Hello everyone....just bought my new coil for my Husky 50.....the original coil #5060272-01...the new replacement # 5039012-01.....Installed it and checked the air gap at least 8 times to make sure it was the correct factory spec. Put my drill on the flywheel...and there was no spark visible when grounding the new plug...so I disconnected the ground wire to make sure nothing was grounding out at the on-off switch...then I held the HT lead and ground myself to the block and felt just the very slightest amount of spark thru my finger.  Then I tested the HT lead on the 20k setting on the ohm scale of my multi meter and it read 6.54 ohms .... which I believe is in the ok range. I also cleaned the magnets on the flywheel.  There is a difference between the new and old coil...that being that the original coil has an external ground wire that attaches to the coil's mounting bolt.  I asked the coil supplier...Randy's Engine Repair....about the difference and they said the new coils are internally grounded and don't use that wire any more..Is this true ?? The other thing I noticed is that when I tried to put the small flywheel cover back on there isn't clearance between the flywheel and the black epoxy coil for it to fit all the way in place.....the reason is that the black epoxy around the armature is flush with the end of the armature and the original sticks out of the epoxy at least a strong 1/16"...which give enough clearance for the cover to slide in.   I could cut the cover to make it fit but first it would be nice to have some good spark.  really appreciate your time and effort in trying to help this old timer out.

I'm not familiar with that, but I thought one of the experts here would have helped you by now...

Even if the coil design is different it should still fit into the saw with out modifying any covers.    I would see about getting a coil that fits correctly because it is possible you have been sent an incorrect coil.    Also make sure where the coil mounts is free of paint so it can be grounded good.   Then ohm out the metal part of the coil to the top of the cylinder and it should be 0 ohms.

Trying to ohm out the new solid state coils is difficult because of the solid state devices and capacitors internal to it.

I just hold the spark plug sideways on top of the cylinder and then pull the rope to see if I get a good spark.    I also use a business card for setting the air gap.

Just want to say thanks for your input....I have returned the coil and am now looking for the correct one...didn't think it was going to be this tough to replace the original one....
