Husqvarna 51
« on: January 12, 2017, 04:35:19 pm »
I just picked up a non running 51 and am attempting to make it run here is what I have done so far.

New spark plug
Cleaned carb
Checked flywheel key
Checked piston through exhaust port

I cannot get it to fire, it has good blue spark when tested with the plug out against the head.  No visible damage on the exhaust side of the piston. Flywheel key is good, set the gap on the coil with a business card.  Tried starting it with a shot of ether, will not fire.  I'm thinking it is low compression?  I can hold it up by the pull start but it slowly will turn over and drop.  Have not tested compression as I don't have a tester.   Any other ideas before I spend money?

Thanks in advance!!

put a teaspoon of 2 cycle oil down plug hole may boost compression enough to start it.

Does the ring have any spring if you push on it with a small screwdriver through the exhaust port?

Thanks for the posts guys.  It was obviously very flooded when I was trying yesterday, still soaked when I messed with it today.  I ended up putting a dribble of 2 stroke oil into the cylinder and it Fired right up and runs great.  I guess it has low compresssion, I could feel it was way tighter with oil in the cylinder pulling it over.  I guess I need a head and piston..

If the piston looked alright through the exhaust port, you may have just flooded it.  Easy to do on an unknown saw.  If it starts and runs great it has good compression

To add to this, let the saw sit for an hour and it started up first pull !  Now I am confused lol

compression sounds allright to me anyway if you can hold the saw and it only slowly drops down on pullstart rope. Possibilities are if she starts ok now after a run maybe the rings were stuck in there grooves and the oil allowed enough compression to start and maybe rings loosened just my wag  ps go easy on the ether good way to burn up a piston just get some 2 stroke mix in a spray bottle and use that. Take it out cut some wood and see what happens

Took a nice muffler modded husqvarna 51 on trade yesterday.

He traded it in toward a bigger cc saw.
