I think the older ones on the bigger saws were metal. Maybe not. I have used a small pick and got the discs out.

IIRC if the vent assembly pushes out from the inside it is all plastic, including the 'white' disc which is pressed into the end of the black tube. I have seen the expanded bronze ones you speak of though on 288s ans such.

I thought the 394 one was some form of metal. I've changed several of them out lately.

The tank vent on my 350 kept falling out so the last time I put one in I used some gasket cement on it and glued it in... Still there through 5 or 6 tanks of fuel and no leaks..
