new 450 not oiling chain
« on: February 24, 2014, 03:27:32 pm »
Only the second or third tank of gas and oil and it stopped oiling.

When I shut it off to change the chain and refill the tanks, it was slinging bar oil generously. After the refills and bar change, nothing.

I am guessing, since it is so new it isnt the oiler drive gear. I assume its plugged somehwere but I cant how or with what unless there is some fiddly bit I am not aware of on this saw that can plug up.

I am using TSC cheap chain oil its super sticky and thick, but it was pumping this oil out fine in 5F weather.

I took the chain and bar off and ran it to see if the oiler was putting out, and it is barely seeping out oil from the rubber output that seals against the bar port. Even at full throttle it is just seeping out slowly. At idle it is just barely oozing oil. Either of these is not enough to get the oil into the bars chain slot and fling oil as it normally would.

Before I tear the oiler out, I'd like to know is there some hidden breather vents or odd troublesome bends or something that gets clogged to cause this in these 450s?

I was going to pump carb or brake cleaner through it to backflush the pump and feed tubes, before I go to the aggravation of taking the clutch and pump out....will carb or brake cleaner damage any of the high tech plastic in this thing?

I was going to use air but didnt know if that might hit a clog and blow out a tube or something... I though the solvent flush would be better but....Thought I better ask before I screw it up.

I would take it to the service place but if they do a simple cleaing and it works I will kick myself as I pay them out of pocket for some simple thing I can do for free.

Is this a common problem with husquavarnas? Even my cheapo 99 buck specials have never suddenly stopped oiling.  I am pretty ticked off at this $400+ saw with a reliable name failing on the second tank.

Other than the oiler it starts easy and runs great.

I have a feeling I am going to have to carry around an oil can now.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.   ;D

Not familiar with the 450 oiler issue, however do not get brake or carb cleaner anywhere near the plastic or painted parts of the saw. In some instances depending on the cleaner formula it will mar the finish.

There is an oil tank vent in most saws, as I said I am not familial with the 450 however look here:
http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=husqvarna&mn=450+E+%282011-07%29&dn=6594_0004

And you will see parts 7,8 and 9 which I believe are the parts that comprise the oil tank vent system. You might try opening the oil tank cap, let it sit for a few moments and close it up again and test. If it oils properly then the tank vent is most likely blocked.

Ive seen problems with this non adjustable oiler.  The plastic 'pinion' worm gear looses its teeth quickly once warm.  The long term fix would be to go with an adjustable oiler off a 350.

Just checked, and it does look like that may repair the problem. Which of the 350 oilers are speaking of there are several that were used on the 350?

Did you day 5 degrees F weather?  I use winter grade oil below about 30degrees F (or mix regular oil 50/50 with kerosene).

yes 5F....it was brutal but the oil was slinging fine.
I havent gotten to fixing it yet.
After it stopped oiling I thought to myself "I bet this thick oil jammed that pump up and stripped the gear" but I couldnt bring myself to believe it would be that delicate.

I never run bar oil in any saw just cheap muti weight motor oil. I thought new saw I should be running the right stuff in it.

So what prevents an adjustable oiler from doing the same thing?

The day the oiler stopped running it was 50F out. If it was slinging oil in the bitter cold a few weeks ago, I cant see why thick oil would fail the pump on a 50F day.

The local Husquavarna service/sales place told me they probably wont cover a bad pump under the warranty, as it is a "wear" item" and I was not using "husqvarna" chain oil. he a nice guy, he said he didnt want to end up charging me for a service call on parts not covered or cleaning to solve the problem.

I will update you and take a few pics when repair day gets here.  I wonder how long it will take to ship an oiler from Sweden lol

Ok I had nothing to do this eve so I took it apart.  These saws seem to have a few good qualities.  They are easy to start, they run nice and strong, and they are easy to take apart.
The design sucks, and here is why. The pump gear is not sealed in its own housing, and gets plastered with oil and dust. The clutch bearing are tiny needle bearings but to my delight after I dropped them, are in a plastic cage and dont fall out easy.

I found the pump gear intact, the oil line to the bar clear.  This automatic oiler is only a couple of simple parts, and off ebay they are pretty cheap.

The breather port is covered with a brass screen, it seems clean. I cant really see the in tank screen that well but I will clean all of these parts later and there is no reason it shouldnt oil, with some thinner oil.  It is probably the in tank screen or the breather as the pump shaft, gear, pinion and outlet are clear and not worn out.

The part that drives the pump gear is a metal coil wrapped around a plastic sleeve. Because an all metal oil pump system enclosed in a sealed case to keep it clean would have driven the retail price up by....oh jeeze maybe as much as $3.  which surely would have bankrupted husqvarna.
 ::)

At least I know now, use thinner oil, and take the whole thing apart once a month to clean the built up crud out of it.

Amazing the quality they are willing to sacrifice to save a few pennies per unit in production costs.

But the pump itself is not bad or broken, and if it keeps plugging the breather up I can make a tube insert onto it and run a breather hose up out of the case and stick a filter on it where it can be maintained easier. As it is now you have to take the clutch off to get to the breather port.

Here's a pic of the oil pump system in desperate need of cleaning more, it was packed solid with oily sawdust.  A large chip or shaving in those gears will really make problems, I better go buy an extra pump assembly to keep on hand.

Check to make sure the worm (plastic sleeve with the metal coil) is actually being turned by the clutch? Study what drives it (The clutch) and how? Is it friction pressure? Is it cogs that engage teeth on each piece? Is it a wing arm engaging the clutch bell?

It looks to me that there are teeth on the clutch bell hub that that engage a socket in the worm to drive it? Is the recess in the worm gear intact and not stripped out?

Well, they have me on Azithromycin and Methylprednisolone. It'll take a week to get through that. My concern was the fever and I have not had any since starting these antibiotics.

I'm thinking that if the cause of the fever is fixed that all the bronchitis will disappear?

Awoke at 3AM this morning with all kinds of conflicting symptoms between then and 6AM were as I went back to sleep.

I have another appointment Monday. We'll see?
