New Husqvarna 550XP leaking bar oil
« on: March 15, 2018, 07:13:35 am »
Hi,

I have just purchased a brand new Husqvarna 550XP from an authorized dealer. Filled it up with gas (Aspen) and bar oil. Started it and let it run for a few minutes. I have not yet cut any wood with it. After it had been sitting on the floor for a while, I noticed it was leaking bar oil on the floor - quite a lot. So I cleaned it up thinking it might be residual oil from the chain. But it just keeps leaking oil. I took it to the dealer and they said it was to be expected and that I must be using bar oil that’s too thin?

I'm not satisfied with this answer and talking to several other long time Husky users, they said a brand new saw should not “behave” like this. I looked up a few YouTube videos – in one of them the repair guy says it’s a bad fit between the feed hose and oil pump.

So I’m curious to hear your opinion. Is this a satisfactory service from the dealer (not even bothering to look at it)? And should I just live with this bar oil leak?

Neither the 550 or 545 did this I had = leak bar oil.   First time I heard of this series leaking bar oil to tell the truth.

Pic of what you think alot is?   Little coming off chain etc after revving etc is normal.

You just using normal bar and chain oil?

IMO sink it in some wood for about 3-5mins of cutting at wot cut after cut  to set the auto tune.   Just to get the saw right.  Then see if it continues.

The saw has been sitting still (not been revved) for about a week. I'm using normal bar and chain oil.

Thanks for the answers so far. :-)

Do you know if there's an official contact e-mail address for Husqvarna (I haven't been able to find any)?

I'd like to get an "official statement" from them saying that this isn't usual. Bring that to the dealer, so that he can either fix it or give me another chainsaw.

Denmark?  Might try husqvarna over there.

I remove the clutch and the clutch drum and clean well. I usually see in 5-10 minutes where it begins to leak. Depending on the saw and model, I use sealing compound / super glue, small cable ties + new oil hoses. I've repaired at least six 346XP, including two new.. many other.

Thank you very much for the suggestions so far. :-)

But since the chainsaw is brand new, it shouldn't be neccesary to clean it.

I don't know if they applied sealing compound between the oil hose and pump from the factory - Maybe I can suggest that to the dealer?

I don't want to take the chainsaw apart myself, since it's still under warranty.

I would take it back and say either fix it, or give my money back in full.  Its not normal for any chainsaw to leak oil like that when new.  this is bad assembly at the factory.  normally a saw starts leaking when it hits a couple of years old as the rubber shrinks, or after its been pulled apart once or twice and rerassembled with the same packing for the oil tube.  your dealer is lazy.

Again thank you for all your replies, I really appreciate it. :-)

I have taken the chainsaw back to the dealer, and their technician said that they can’t give me back the money in full?! But he offered to repair it.

They have now had it in the shop for little over a week and I haven’t heard back from them yet. I will report back when the results are in..
